Hi friends. Welcome back to Week 2 of our One Room Challenge™ Tropical Powder Room Makeover hosted by Linda of Calling it Home and media partner House Beautiful.
This week was really about making design decisions. The biggest decision was the wallpaper. I put it out to my Facebook and Instagram community and there were two leading contenders out of the four wallpapers I had narrowed down, #1 and #4.
I really liked #1 because it has a vintage vibe to it…like Old Hawaii. The muted colors were attractive to me and I loved the print itself. Think of all the fun I could have with the pineapple accessories!
I loved the print of #2 but after careful evaluation, the art didn’t seem as realistic.
Ahh #3, who doesn’t love a good banana leaf print right? I mean, it’s very popular. That was my issue with #3…it’s everywhere! I didn’t want my space to look just like everybody else’s, so I decided against #3. I may still use it as a backdrop in my dining room…who knows, we’ll see.
#4 Makes me smile. The vibrancy, the colors, the scale of the tropical leaves and flowers…all of it. I want the powder room to be a fun, happy space. It’s also the the one that guests see and use when they come over so it should be a star.
It was between #1 and #4, but a decision has been made. Drum roll please….I decided to go with #4!
Aren’t the colors beautiful? The black background just makes all the tropical colors POP! I’m crossing my fingers that it looks this good in person.
This is a big investment in this room and it needs to be the showstopper. I’ve placed the order with the vendor who is in Portugal. They were very nice and created a custom order for me with 5 wider sheets than what they normally sell which mean less seams (not less money!).
Here’s what the overall plan looks like for now… The wallpaper will be the backdrop to the entire room. Once I have the actual wallpaper in hand, I may change some of the finishes, but overall this is the design plan.
I’m replacing the existing oval sink with a rectangular sink.
The countertop and backsplash will be a pre-fab quartz.
I found this matte black faucet for a very reasonable price. I’m hoping it looks as good as it does in the photo when it arrives. The reviews were good so I’m hopeful.
I’ve also chosen to go with black hardware in terms of the towel ring and the toilet paper holder. This way it blends into the backdrop rather than stand out. I don’t want to take away from the wallpaper in any way.
The existing vanity cabinet will get a facelift with a coat (or two) of glossy black paint. I’m having the doors and drawers sprayed next week.
As for art, I’ve decided to have canvas photos of my daughter printed. The style I want is pricey because it has black frames surrounding the canvas so I may have to DIY frames around plain canvas to save some money! I didn’t want to find art for the sake of finding art. I had planned to get these photos printed anyway and they look so good, don’t you think? The photo in the green costume was from her Ho’ike or Hula Recital last year and the two on the right was from a Tahitian Dance competition last summer.
Well, that’s it for week 2 excitement. Thanks again to Linda from Calling it Home for hosting this challenge. It’s definitely making me check off items from the to do list that’s been on there longer than it should be.
See you again next week for updates on the progress!
